Abstract

Tropilaelaps mites are harmful, external parasites of multiple species of honey bees and originated in Southeast Asia but have been spreading. Two species, T. mercedesae and T. clareae are known to parasitize Apis mellifera, the honey bee species introduced to and managed in the United States. While neither species of Tropilaelaps mites has been found in North America, beekeepers should stay informed about the mites’ biology and management, as well as their own roles in monitoring and reporting.
