Summary
This publication provides an overview of the Asian longhorned tick. This invasive species was reported in the US in 2017, and is currently found in 12 states. It feeds on host animals, causing reduced growth and production, and even death from blood loss. Found in shaded areas, it can lay 2,000-4,000 fertile eggs and affects 17 mammals and 3 avian species. To protect yourself, use EPA-approved repellent, check for ticks frequently, wear permethrin-treated clothing, avoid dense brush, and consult a veterinarian.
