Overview

Dr. Souza completed her B.S. at the University of Maryland and then worked for a few years in research before attending veterinary school at North Carolina State University. Upon graduation, she worked in a small animal and exotic pet private practice for a year before coming to the University of Tennessee to complete a residency in Avian & Zoological Medicine and MPH. Since starting as an assistant professor in 2008, Dr. Souza�s responsibilities have shifted to a public health focus including overseeing the veterinary concentration of the MPH program and serving on numerous public health related committees. Her research seeks to answer questions and then apply those answers toward policy action to address One Health related issues.

Research Focus

Food safety issues associated with backyard poultry and bushmeat consumption. The relationship between pet ownership and human health.

VMP 876 - One Health

Online course addresses the link between human, animal, and environmental health. Each online module focuses on some aspect of "One Health" and may include topics such as emergency preparedness, zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance and food safety, responsible pet ownership and the human-animal bond, and the effects of climate on disease prevalence. Methods of intervention and problem solving such as research design, program evaluation, community education, and policy analysis are also incorporated.

Registration Restriction(s): Veterinary Medicine Students only.
Registration Permission: Consent of instructor.
