It Accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to accessibility, the Marketing and Communications (M&amp;C) and the Information Technology Services (ITS) departments strive to meet at least AA compliance from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/WCAG21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web Content Accessibility Guidelines<\/a>, or WCAG.&nbsp; Throughout this document, we have included links, when appropriate, of the WCAG guideline for further reading, if you so wish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is accessibility and why is it important?&nbsp; Derek Featherstone, a well-known speaker on the subject of accessibility, talks about accessibility in this video available on LinkedIn Learning: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynda.com\/Accessibility-tutorials\/What-accessibility\/435008\/446179-4.html?srchtrk=index%3a1%0alinktypeid%3a2%0aq%3aUX+Foundations%3a+Accessibility%0apage%3a1%0as%3arelevance%0asa%3atrue%0aproducttypeid%3a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is Accessibility?<\/a>&nbsp; Another great video from Derek Featherstone is: <a href=\"https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/wpguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2022\/11\/UTIA-Accessiblity-Plan-_2022_SIGNED.pdf\">UTIA Accessibility Plan<\/a> (updated 11\/2022)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/utia.tennessee.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/UTIA-Web-Accessiblity-Procedures.pdf\">UTIA Accessibility Procedures<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe power of the Web is in its universality.&nbsp; Access by everyone regardless of disability\nis an essential aspect.\u201d Tim Berners-Lee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTIA strives to use universal design with the web\nredesign.&nbsp; Universal design is the\nconcept of designing for everyone &#8211; people with &amp; without disabilities, no\nmatter their age. &nbsp;It is easier to design\nfor accessibility from the very beginning, rather than as an afterthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccessible design is good design.\u201d Steve Ballmer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please read on for tips and best practices to ensure that\nyour website meets the accessibility guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Tips for Your Content and Accessibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tips to help you think through your content:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"#_CMS_Tools\">CMS Tools<\/a>: We are using WordPress as our new content management system, or CMS.&nbsp; <\/li><li><a href=\"#_Link_Descriptive_Text\">Link Descriptive Text<\/a>: How can content owners help visitors that use screen readers understand the context of a hyperlink?<\/li><li><a href=\"#_Image_Alt_Text\">Image Alt Texts<\/a>: How can we ensure that our visitors with vision issues know what an image contains?<\/li><li><a href=\"#_Color\">Color<\/a>: How can we make the use of colors on a webpage easier for our visitors to see the content?<\/li><li><a href=\"#_External_Links\">External Links<\/a>: How can we let our visitors know that a link is an external link, a PDF, a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"anchor wp-block-heading\" id=\"_CMS_Tools\">CMS Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to assist content owners in ensuring that their\ncontent is accessible to everyone that visits the website by creating boundaries\nwithin the UTIA CMS.&nbsp; These boundaries\nare designed to assist content owners from inadvertently violating an\naccessibility guideline and ensuring that the website content meet the\nstandards for accessibility.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"anchor wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Link_Descriptive_Text\">Link Descriptive Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/link-purpose-in-context.html\">WCAG\n2.4.2:<\/a> For visitors that have vision problems, from color blindness to\nbeing totally blind, the use of screen readers is important when they visit\nwebsites.&nbsp; To make it easier for these\nvisitors, please refrain from using \u201cclick here\u201d, \u201cread more\u201d or \u201clearn more\u201d\nonly in the descriptive text for links.&nbsp;\nYou want the visitor to understand the context of the hyperlink.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"anchor wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Image_Alt_Text\">Image Alt Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/non-text-content.html\">WCAG 1.1.1<\/a>: In the alt text for photos, use a meaningful and descriptive alt text for all graphics and images.&nbsp; Also, do not use the file name of an image as the alt text, as it is not descriptive enough.&nbsp; The alt text is read by screen readers and search engines and can also been seen if one hovers their cursor over an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn about best practices regarding alt text, please see <a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/alttext\/\">WebAIM&#8217;s Alternative Text<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"anchor wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Color\">Color <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/contrast-minimum.html\">WCAG\n1.4.3<\/a>: Departments and content owners are encouraged to use the combination\nof slate gray and white for background\/text colors.&nbsp; Our CMS will not allow content owners to use\nany other color scheme for the background and text colors.&nbsp; Using this color combination ensures that\nyour content meets the accessibility guidelines set forth by the Web Content\nAccessibility Guidelines.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cUT Orange\u201d used with white or slate gray does not meet\nthe color contrast ratio guidelines.&nbsp; In\nfact, the \u201cUT Orange\u201d should only be used as an accent color on webpages.&nbsp; Content owners are encouraged to use the other\ncolors found in the Style\nGuide as accent colors for decorative elements and button outlines \u2013 but\nnot as a text or background color.&nbsp; The\ncolor choices that are available for text, background and accent colors have\nbeen a part of the branding from the M&amp;C team.&nbsp; The team has placed boundaries to ensure that\nthe color palette can only be used as accent colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure that your color contrast meets the guidelines,\nplease use the <a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/resources\/contrastchecker\/\">WebAIM\nColor Contrast Checker<\/a> to check the contrast ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/use-of-color.html\">WCAG 1.4.1<\/a>:\nDo not use color as the only visual means of conveying information, such as a\nred asterisk for a required field in a form or using only colors in a bar or\npie chart.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"anchor wp-block-heading\" id=\"_External_Links\">External Links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/link-purpose-link-only.html\">WCAG\n2.4.9<\/a>: With WordPress, we will let our visitors know if a link they are\nclicking on is an external, which would open the link up in a new tab, or a PDF\ndocument, Word document or an Excel spreadsheet.&nbsp; A small icon will be used and it will be\nautomatically applied to each link in the website.&nbsp; This enables our visitors to predict what\nclicking on a link will do.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_PDF\">PDFs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of PDFs on websites adds difficulties for our\nvisitors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PDFs are usually hard to read on mobile devices<\/li><li>PDFs are usually not created from an original\naccessible document<\/li><li>Scanned documents are not accessible due to the\nlack of selectable text and tagging<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage that information that would be found in a PDF\nbe placed on a webpage.&nbsp; Having this\ninformation on a webpage is easier to maintain, if any corrections needs to be\nmade.&nbsp; If you MUST have a PDF available\nfor download, PDF documents must follow the WCAG 2.1 AA standards for digital\naccessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn about making an style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Graphics\">Graphics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/images-of-text.html\">WCAG\n1.4.5<\/a>: Departments are encouraged not to use text in graphics.&nbsp; If you must have text in graphics, the text\nin its entirety must be included in the alt text for that image.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/contrast-enhanced.html\">WCAG\n1.4.6<\/a>: If you must use text in graphics, please use the <a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/resources\/contrastchecker\/\">WebAIM Color Contrast\nChecker<\/a> to check the contrast ratio.<\/li><li>Please do not use orange text or backgrounds in\ngraphics <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Podcasts\">Podcasts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/audio-only-and-video-only-prerecorded.html\">WCAG\n1.2.1<\/a>: All podcasts that are placed on your department\u2019s website should have\na transcript below the podcast itself, embedded on the same webpage as the\ncorresponding podcast.&nbsp; The recommended\nservice for podcasts is <a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/\">Anchor<\/a>, which is used\nby the M&amp;C department and offers free hosting of your content and allows\nfor uploading to other platforms such as: Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, PodBean,\netc. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"utia-accentbar\"><hr style=\"background-color:#ff8300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Videos\">Videos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/captions-prerecorded.html\">WCAG\n1.2.2<\/a>: All videos are to have synchronized captions embedded into the\nvideo.&nbsp; Please do not totally depend on\nthe auto-generated captions generated by YouTube \u2013 it is not 100% accurate, as\nYouTube uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate the captions.&nbsp; Additionally, the transcript should be housed\non the same page as the video itself, or the transcript should be used to edit\nthe auto-generated captions generated by YouTube.&nbsp; applications,\netc.) should be checked by UTIA-ITS to ensure that the service provided is\naccessible to our website visitors.&nbsp;\nAdditionally, CampusPress fully checks all plug-ins to ensure that
