Publish Date: March 22 2018
Abstract
Thin horses can be caused by factors like age, disease, and inadequate nutrition. In the US, horse starvation is common, often caused by owners' ignorance. The ban on horse slaughter has led to a movement to rescue and rehabilitate emaciated horses. However, even with proper care, diseases and impairments can prevent proper condition. Up to 20% of starved horses may die, making it crucial to prevent these conditions and provide adequate care. This publication includes several points of examination and considerations to make when helping a severely malnourished horse.
