{"id":889,"date":"2020-05-06T19:21:43","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T19:21:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/?p=889"},"modified":"2020-05-06T19:22:22","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T19:22:22","slug":"ut-gardens-may-2020-plant-of-the-month-warrior-onion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/ut-gardens-may-2020-plant-of-the-month-warrior-onion\/","title":{"rendered":"UT Gardens\u2019 May 2020 Plant of the Month: &#8216;Warrior&#8217; Onion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted by Jason\nReeves, research horticulturist, University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson<br>\n<\/em><br>\nThe\n\u2018Warrior\u2019 onion is not just a plant for the dinner table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2016 All American Selection winner,\n\u2018Warrior\u2019 onion has become one of my favorite plants for its beautiful blue\nspiky foliage that stands out all season long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly referred to as a green,\nspring, or bunching onion, \u2018Warrior\u2019 is good for eating but great when used an\nornamental. This selection is easy to grow from seed or plants. Sow seed\nindoors in March or outdoors in mid to late April. Seed can be direct sown in\nthe garden, but for best results, start them in good quality potting soil in\ntrays or pots. Transplant them into the garden 3 to 6 inches apart once they\nare 3 to 6 inches tall. For eating purposes, they will mature as early as 60\ndays and are good raw as scallions or cooked and perfect for grilling whole.\nThey also stay tender longer than most other spring onions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/Warrion-onion-growing-with-vincaweb.jpg\" alt=\"Warrior onion growing with vincaweb\" class=\"wp-image-896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/Warrion-onion-growing-with-vincaweb.jpg 960w, https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/Warrion-onion-growing-with-vincaweb-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/utia-dev.tennessee.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/Warrion-onion-growing-with-vincaweb-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leave them alone and they become\nonions of great beauty. The spiky blue leaves will grow to the size of your\nthumb, reaching 16 to 22 inches tall, and remain attractive into the winter.\nUnlike most blue foliaged plants, Warrior onions remain glaucous blue all year. They look great poking thorough lower growing flowers\nlike vinca, angelonia, and compact forms of cosmos in garden beds. They also\nmake excellent \u201cthriller\u201d elements in a pot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with other onions, Warrior onions perform best in full sun in average to dry soil. In a normal to mild winter, they will overwinter and produce 2- to 3-inch heads of small white flowers, attracting pollinators in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the specimens in the UT Gardens, Jackson, you can find Warrior onions near the Friendship Plaza at the UT Gardens, Knoxville, and in their kitchen garden.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture.
