Two new\npublications from University of Tennessee Extension provide guidance for the\nsituations and decisions dairy farmers are currently facing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.tennessee.edu\/publications\/Documents\/D98.pdf\">Disposal of\nEmergency Dump Milk During COVID-19 Crisis<\/a> (Publication D 98) gives suggestions for dairy farmers who have\nexcess milk due to the reduced capacity of processing plants. \u201cThis publication\nwas created to provide farmers with options and fertilizer considerations if a\nfarm is told to emergency dump their milk,\u201d says Liz Eckelkamp, assistant\nprofessor of animal science and UT Extension dairy specialist. Eckelkamp co-authored\nthe publication along with Shawn Hawkins, a professor in the Department of\nBiosystems Engineering and Soil Science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.tennessee.edu\/publications\/Documents\/D106.pdf\">COVID-19 and\nthe Dairy Industry: The Road So Far<\/a> (Publication D 106), outlines the current\nsituation across the dairy industry and resources available to farmers who need\nassistance. \u201cThere is a lot of uncertainty and misinformation surrounding\nCOVID-19 impacts on the food industry,\u201d says Eckelkamp. \u201cThis publication\nexplains why we are seeing things like emergency milk dumping and how the\nripples along the supply chain are impacting dairy farmers. The publication also\nincludes an exhaustive list of available resources, all in one place, so dairy\nfarmers can easily access help if they need it,\u201d continues the expert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other publications and resources to help families\nand farmers navigate the COVID-19 crisis are available online at <a href=\"https:\/\/utextension.tennessee.edu\/\">utextension.tennessee.edu<\/a> or by contacting your local\ncounty Extension office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through its land-grant mission\nof research, teaching and extension, the University of Tennessee Institute of\nAgriculture touches lives and provides Real.
